A news item has been published today in a section of the media stating that UT Chandigarh has ordered the return of doctors to their parent cadre. This news is misleading and not based on facts. There is no proposal to repatriate any doctor to their parent cadre. In the last 6 months, only 7 doctors have been repatriated; two of them were nearing their age of retirement on superannuation. In other 5 cases, there were Administrative issues. The Hon’ble Administrator has time and again expressed his vision of making the city a medical hub for providing quality patient care services. Patient care is of primary importance for the Health Department. There is an acute shortage of doctors in the city; however, the doctors continue to provide services to patients from about 8 states in the region. Three rounds of interactions have been held in the last financial year with doctors from nearby states aspiring to work on deputation in the city. Despite the selected doctors joining their duties, the shortage continues. In such circumstances, there is no question of repatriating any doctor unless there is a gross performance issue or the concerned doctor is nearing his/her retirement. To avoid unnecessary controversy between deputationists and non- deputationists, media is requested to verify the facts from the authorities. The provision of services to citizens is the primary issue, and any compartmentalisation of human resources on such divisive tendencies will adversely affect the delivery of services. Cooperation of all sections of society is solicited in making Chandigarh the best city not only for patient care services but also for those providing such services.
