This significant drop in road accident deaths in the state is in stark contrast to the nationwide trend, which saw a 9.4 percent increase in road deaths in 2022, resulting in a total of 1,68,491 road accident deaths in India. .
Launching the Punjab Road Accident and Traffic Annual Report-2022, DGP Gaurav Yadav said that with the launch of the first-of-its-kind Road Safety Force (SSF), a special police team to deal with road safety and anti-social elements, this The downward trend is likely to accelerate further.
He said that SSF, the brainchild of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, would soon be at the service of the people, which would not only help save precious lives by reducing accidents but also streamline traffic in the state.
Appreciating the hard work done by the teams of Punjab Police, Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Center, the DGP appealed to the people to follow the road safety rules to make the roads of Punjab safe.
Giving more information, ADGP Traffic AS Roy said that Punjab Road Accident and Traffic Annual Report-2022 is an initiative of Punjab Police and Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre. In this report, road accidents, traffic violations and road safety measures in Punjab have been analyzed in depth. He said that it is hoped that the report will prove helpful for the traffic and law enforcement personnel to understand and resolve traffic related issues in the state. In addition, this report will also serve as an important reference material for scholars and academicians working in the field of road safety. Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Center Director Dr. Navdeep Aseja while giving information about the main findings of the report said that a total of 5,55,429 motor vehicles were registered in Punjab in the year 2022 at an annual growth rate of 7.44%. He said that the total number of registered vehicles in Punjab till August 2023 was 1.33 crore (1,32,87,350). He said that in February, July, September, October, November and December, compared to last year 2021, there was a decrease in road accident deaths, while all other months saw an increase in road accident deaths. is He said that speeding vehicles and stray cattle are the main causes of road accident deaths in Punjab. He further informed that in the year 2022, a total of 2085 people died in road accidents due to speeding and 421 deaths were due to stray animals. It is to be noted that the highest number of road accident deaths in the year 2022, which accounted for 26 percent of the total road accident deaths in the state, were recorded between 6 pm and 9 pm, while road accident deaths At least 75 percent of the deaths are recorded in rural areas.
