Garhshankar October 31 - District Magistrate Hoshiarpur Komal Mittal in exercise of powers under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973 (Act No. 2 of 1974) before 15 November 2023 Prohibition orders have been issued on the operation of molasses-sugar making plant within the district limits. Apart from this, there will be a ban on the use of any chemical to make jaggery. He said that Chief Agriculture Officer, Food Safety Officer, District Food and Supply Controller and Senior Police Captain Hoshiarpur will be responsible for implementing the orders. District Magistrate informed that through a letter from Chief Agriculture Officer, Hoshiarpur, it has been brought to his notice.
That molasses manufacturers in the district use chemicals/sugar to purify sugarcane juice while preparing molasses before the sugarcane crushing season. Jaggery and sugar prepared using chemicals/sugar are very hazardous to health.
