He said the disease most often occurs in people 40 years of age or older who have a history of smoking. These may be individuals who are current or ex-smokers. He said that the majority (about 90 percent) of people suffering from the disease have a history of smoking and that smoking is responsible for 46 percent of cases of the disease. After that, outdoor and indoor pollution is responsible for 21 percent of the disease cases and occupational exposure to gases and fumes is responsible for 16 percent.
