
PGIMER Chandigarh Hosts Public Forum on “Obesity, Diabetes, and PCOS” as Part of National Nutrition Month Observance.
PGIMER Chandigarh’s Department of Dietetics observed National Nutrition Month by hosting a Public Forum on “Obesity, Diabetes, and PCOS” on 7th September 2024. Held at the APC Auditorium, the event ran under the theme “Janta ke Saath PGI ka Haath,” aiming to raise awareness on the importance of nutrition in managing lifestyle diseases. Key speakers included Dr. Nancy Sahni, Chief Dietician, who discussed how nutrition plays a pivotal role in preventing and managing obesity, diabetes, and PCOS.

Dr. Sanjay Jain, Chief Guest and Dean of Research, stressed the need for focusing on waist circumference, not just weight, as a key indicator of chronic health risks. Dr. Ashima Goyal, Sub Dean, emphasized the growing burden of diabetes, obesity, and PCOS in India, calling for greater responsibility in adopting preventive nutritional practices. Dr. Ashok Kumar, Additional Medical Superintendent, echoed the importance of prevention over cure. Dr. Vanita Jain highlighted PGIMER’s two PCOS clinics, noting that lifestyle modifications and weight loss can often reverse PCOS symptoms. Dr. Devi Dayal, from Pediatric Endocrinology, praised the initiative and urged for more forums to spread awareness, particularly on Type 1 diabetes management. Dr. Sanjay Badada and Dr. Vishal discussed the serious health consequences of obesity, including heart disease, blindness, and GERD. The forum concluded with a question-and-answer session, where the public engaged with experts. The event was widely appreciated for its valuable insights into managing lifestyle diseases through nutrition, contributing significantly to public health awareness.
