Patiala, August 2 - Additional Director of Orthopedics Spine Department of Fortis Hospital Mohali, Dr. Deepak Joshi has said that now it is possible to treat minor patients suffering from complex spine disorders. At Fortis Mohali, two 14-year-old children have been successfully treated with corrective spinal deformity surgery and their lives have been brightened.
In a media conference here today, Dr. Joshi proudly informed that the Scoliosis Division of Orthopedics Spine Department has given a new life to two minor children suffering from Pediatric Spinal Deformity by performing a first of its kind and technically challenging surgery in the Northern Region. has given He explained that scoliosis is a deformity of the spine that curves to one side and is often treated in adolescence. It is usually idiopathic, meaning it does not have a specific cause.
He said a 14-year-old boy from Bathinda was born with hemivertebra (a part of his spine not developing). Due to which he had a severe curve in the middle part of his back, due to which he had to lean forward. A delay in treatment could have resulted in the child developing a peculiar deformity, affecting his development and vital organs. A team of doctors under the leadership of Dr. Joshi recently successfully performed a rare procedure of homi-vertebra excision and kyphscoliosis correction on a young patient during a 4-hour surgery. The child started walking the day after the surgery and was discharged from the hospital three days later without a brace.
He said that in another case, a 14-year-old boy from Sriganganagar, Rajasthan was born with congenital cirrhosis of the spine. In which the baby's spine did not develop properly in the womb. Dr. Joshi performed a pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) on the patient, which allowed the spine to heal. The child recovered the next day and was discharged on the third day. Dr. Joshi cautioned that delay in treatment can damage the spinal cord and the functioning of the heart and lungs can also be affected.
