Chandigarh, May 20 2024:- The Punjab Raj Bhavan was abuzz with pride and joy as it celebrated the West Bengal Foundation Day. , a day to commemorate the establishment of the state and reflect on its rich history, cultural diversity, and the progress it continues to make. Sh. Rajeev Verma, Advisor to the Administrator, presided over the function, In his address, the Adviser highlighted West Bengal's geographical grandeur, from the majestic Himalayan ranges in the north to the melodic sea in the south. The state has been a crucible of civilizations, witnessing the rise and fall of empires, and serving as a cultural melting pot. The confluence of the sacred rivers Ganges and Brahmaputra symbolizes this spiritual and cultural convergence. The occasion marks a significant historical event dating back to June 20, 1947, when the Bengal Legislative Assembly decided to bifurcate Bengal, leading to the establishment of West Bengal. This day stands as a testament to the state's rich history, achievements, and future aspirations. The history of West Bengal is deeply intertwined with India’s struggle for independence, producing legendary figures such as Bipin Chandra Pal, Arvindo Ghosh, Matangini Hazra, Kanhaiyalal Dutt, and the iconic Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The state also gave birth to 'Vande Mataram' and 'Jana-Gana-Mana', India's national anthem, penned by the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. West Bengal's legacy extends to social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, and spiritual leaders such as Swami Vivekananda and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The state is renowned for its contributions to art, literature, and cinema, home to luminaries like Satyajit Ray, the first Oscar Academy award winner from India. Tourism plays a pivotal role in the state's economy, with landmarks like Howrah Bridge, Victoria Memorial, and the Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Adviser emphasized that under the 'Ek Bharat Shresth Bharat' initiative, the celebration reaffirms India's commitment to unity in diversity. The event also featured captivating folk dance performances by the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi team, from Banga Bhawan and Kalibadi earning them a well-deserved round of applause.
