Dr Amit Garg, senior bariatric and metabolic surgeon at IVY Hospital, said that it is a common perception that obesity is a disease of the rich. In fact, obesity is not only caused by overeating, but also by adopting wrong eating habits. Therefore, obesity can affect both rich and poor alike. Giving information about surgical options, Dr. Amit Garg said that patients can undergo bariatric surgery.
In a gastric sleeve gastrectomy, the size of the stomach is reduced using a stapler that restricts food intake. In gastric bypass surgery, the capacity of the stomach is reduced by stapling the intestines to create a small stomach pocket. These operations are performed through laparoscopy and are keyhole surgeries.
