Chandigarh, October 30 (Paigam-E-Jagat) Punjab Police has created a new record in the recovery of heroin. In the fight against drugs, the police have seized 1090 kilos of heroin in less than 10 months and have registered 9571 cases in different districts. 13,197 accused involved in drug trafficking have been arrested. The police claim that there are more than 3 thousand big fish among the caught accused. Prior to this, the largest recovery of heroin by the Punjab Police was made in the year 2020. In 2020, 759.82 kg of heroin was seized by the police. The reason for this year's record seizure of heroin is being attributed to increased efforts by Pakistan-based traffickers to push the drug into Punjab during the monsoon season. The police noticed a new trend of trying to send drugs in huge quantities of 30 kg and more across the border through riverine areas in one go.
Apart from Special Task Force on Drugs and District Police, Special Services Operation Cell, Counter Intelligence played an important role in stopping drug trafficking. According to officials, apart from heroin, the police have seized 778.36 kg of opium, 32,883.04 kg of poppy seeds, 55.44 kg of hashish and 0.07 kg of cocaine. Taking strict action, the police have attached the properties of 111 drug smugglers.
