In a fresh advisory, acting Civil Surgeon Dr Renu Singh and Epidemiologist Dr Harmandeep Kaur said that adult mosquitoes “usually” rest indoors in dark areas, under beds or behind curtains. It is a day-biting mosquito and hence personal protection — long-sleeve shirts, pants/trousers, salwars and socks can be very efficient in preventing mosquito bites.
People with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension or renal issues, pregnant women, the elderly and children should be protected from mosquito bites. Notably, the Aedes species, which is the dengue vector, thrives in areas close to the human population and the mosquito lays its eggs in water-filled containers inside the house and surrounding areas. These could be any containers, from refrigerator trays to houseplants or flower vases or even a stray bottle cap or eggshells as the mosquito needs just about a teaspoon of water to lay its eggs.
Health officials informed that the inspection and awareness campaign by the teams of the District Health Department for the prevention of Dengue fever has been going on continuously. They said health teams are regularly checking coolers, fridge trays, pots, empty tires, boxes and other containers etc. The survey and awareness campaign in all the health blocks of the district is going on in full swing. For any information, the health department's helpline number 104 can be contacted.
