Chandigarh December 14, 2023 : A special lecture on “Interrelationship between Urdu and Persian” was organized in the Department of Urdu, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with Punjab Urdu Academy, Maler Kotla (Government of Punjab) in which Dr. Zain Ul Iba Associate Professor, Department of Persian, University of Delhi , while discussing the arrival of Persian in Punjab and the influence of Persian on Punjabi language, literature and civilization, said that Punjab has been a favorable place for Persian language. In his address, While mentioning some historical books said that Persian language had come to Punjab before the Islamic era. He further said that most of the genres of Urdu literature have come from Persian, in which Ghazal, Qasida, Marsiya, Masnavi, Rabai, Dastan etc. can be seen especially. He further said that the Persian language has played an important role in the development of not only Urdu but many languages of the subcontinent. Professor Zain Ul-Aba described the relationship between Persian and Urdu as a natural relationship, saying that since the Persian language belongs to the Indo-Iranian family, a natural relationship is established between Urdu and Persian. There is similarity in terms and compounds in both the languages. He also told the students that Urdu language has accepted the flavor of Persian language more than Arabic language.
Introducing the distinguished speaker, Dr. Ali Abbas, Chairman of the Urdu Department, highlighted the lexical similarities found in Urdu and Persian languages and explained how words from one language change their vocabulary and literal meaning after entering the other language. Be different and become part of the new language. This is the reason why words spoken in Urdu, whether of Arabic or Persian origin, are now recognized as Urdu words. Presiding over the program, Prof. Rehana Parveen briefly and extensively discussed the relationship between Urdu and Persian in her presidential speech. Some students of the department also recited Urdu and Persian poetry. It is clear that the researcher of the department, Khaliqur Rahman Awan took the responsibility of organizing this program. In the end, Dr. Zulfikar Ali, teacher of the Persian department, thanked all the participants.
